Green Turf Algae (Cladophora Sp.)
Difficulty: Easy
Invasive: Yes
Appearance: Green, branching, filamentous
Distribution: Worldwide
An attractive but invasive macro algae. It starts out looking very nice and is a slow-growing algae, but given the right conditions it can spread rapidly. It is very tough and hard making manual removal very difficult and usually grows back afterwards. Cladophora can be controlled by maintaining good water quality as well as a number of grazers that may feed on it such as Emerald Crabs and Sea Hares. It also depends on light and can possibly be treated by depriving affected rocks of any light for 2-3 weeks.
